
The issue of human trafficking, partial to none, presents a systemic threat to the state of Texas. Estimates reveal that nearly 40 million people are enslaved today (Alliance 8.7 2017), with nearly 313,000 victims in Texas alone Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault 2017). In fact, the state of Texas is responsible for contributing the second highest number of calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline out of all 50 states (Huertas 2018). Despite the rising influence of this illegal industry, the effort to identify this crime and prosecute its culprits via the Texas criminal justice system faces significant barriers.
